Next up for the Saturday Night Cine Club: Hunger (2008), the compelling story of Bobby Sands, an Irish Republican Army leader who led a hunger strike in 1981 at Maze prison in Northern Ireland. The drama stars Michael Fassbender, an Irish-German actor who made a splash in 2011 as the star of three noteworthy films: Shame (he won the Best Actor award at the Venice Film Festival), A Dangerous Method (he played Carl Jung) and X-Men: First Class. An Irish/British film that won a top award at the Cannes Film Festival, Hunger was directed by the fearless Steve McQueen (Shame). ADVISORY: Though acclaimed by many critics, the film includes foul language, violence and other tough content.

In January, the Charlotte Film Society was proud to show -- two times -- The Interrupters, Steve James' riveting and hopeful documentary about efforts to stop gang violence in Chicago. Leading the insightful discussions after both the matinee and the evening show were the Rev. K. Frances Cook, director of CMPD's Gang of One Unit, and Willie Ratchford, co-chair of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Gang Prevention Coalition. There was a large turnout for both screenings -- and the discussions afterwards.
